IIT Mandi introduces five UG programmes, including General Engineering

Five new undergraduate programmes were unveiled on July 11 by the Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi, and will start in the 2023-24 academic year. These five programmes are the BS in Chemical Science, the B Tech in General Engineering, the B Tech in Microelectronics and VLSI, the B Tech in Materials Science and Engineering, the B Tech in Mathematics & Computing, and the B Tech in Materials Science and Engineering.

These courses are designed to give students specialised knowledge and abilities in cutting-edge disciplines, opening up a variety of professional options. Admissions are now available through the All India JEE (Advanced) rating system.

Programme Information

B.Tech. in General Engineering

The General Engineering degree at IIT Mandi is a unique B Tech degree that strives to give students a grasp of fundamental engineering principles while also enabling them to customise their educational journey through flexible specialisations. In the first two years of the degree, students will take courses in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, data science, and computer science as an introduction to engineering studies.

The final two years of the programme are particularly flexible, allowing students to customise their paths based on their interests and career goals by selecting a specialisation from a variety of options, including Energy Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing, e-Mobility, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, and other emerging sectors like fashion design and technology, animation, and product design. One unique aspect of the programme is its collaborations with prestigious universities. Additionally, students will have the chance to spend a year studying or working in their chosen field at a partner institution or business.

B.Tech. in Microelectronics and VLSI

The B Tech in Microelectronics and VLSI programme at IIT Mandi seeks to prepare students with the theoretical understanding and practical abilities in VLSI and chip designing to address the industry’s future needs.

Using industry-standard EDA tools, the program’s curriculum covers advanced courses in device level, design, fabrication, and CAD tools. The programme offers clean room facilities, instrumentation equipment, and a strong industry-oriented curriculum with a focus on developing a qualified workforce for semiconductor design. Students are encouraged to explore multidisciplinary courses and select electives in microelectronics and VLSI engineering through this curriculum. Additionally, there will be opportunities for industrial internships, a year-long major technical project, and hands-on learning.

B.Tech. in Material Science and Engineering

The Bachelor of Technology (B Tech) in Materials Science and Engineering curriculum at IIT Mandi will provide a thorough education in the field of materials science, with an emphasis on engineering applications and employable skills.

The programme will provide students with theoretical understanding and practical competence on both conventional and innovative materials, with a focus on developing fields such as sustainability, renewable energy, urban mining, quantum technologies, and artificial intelligence. The program’s hands-on research experience section will help students close the gap between academic study and practical engineering. The program’s graduates will be equipped to assume leadership positions in sectors like semiconductors, manufacturing, cars, energy, and waste management.

B.Tech. in Mathematics and Computing

A strong foundation in mathematics, computers, and computational thinking will be provided to students in the innovative new B Tech degree in mathematics and computing. The emphasis will be on acquiring analytical and problem-solving abilities that may be used in a variety of science and engineering professions.

This programme will equip graduates for a variety of job prospects in companies, academia, and research and development by addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of mathematical and scientific computing. It seeks to develop graduates with a broad range of computational and mathematical skills, tools, and knowledge, empowering them to successfully address challenging real-world issues.

BS in Chemical Sciences

A distinctive and thorough 4-year Bachelor of Science (BS) course in Chemical Sciences is now being offered by the School of Chemical Sciences at IIT Mandi. This programme offers minors in a variety of engineering and humanities fields, including computer science & engineering, communication engineering, management, and German language, among others, and allows students to specialise in important areas of chemistry, such as organic, inorganic, physical, and materials chemistry.

The curriculum will offer BS-level research possibilities, enabling students to start conducting research right away. After finishing the program’s Master’s component (MS), graduates will have the option of pursuing a research career, with placement opportunities in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and technology industries. The program duration is four years for the BS program along with an optional 1-year MS.
